Frequently Asked Questions...
Refinishing guitar, what stage do I add a vinyl decal, and how do I seal it?
I'm refinishing an old guitar. I've sanded it down to raw wood and am planning on painting it but I want to add a vinyl decal to make it look cooler. What stage of the painting process should I apply the decal, and how could I seal it to the guitar permanently?
I plan on ordering the decal from: http://www.tarcalgraphics.com/
any help or advice is appreciated!
I read that these vinyl decals don't work well with nitrocellulose lacquer, so are there clear-coats available that don't have this in them?
Answer:
According to the application instructions, no provision was suggested for clear coating the guitar once the new decal is fitted to the guitar.
It sounds like the decal is printed on signage vinyl. Products like Lacquer, if fresh, can possibly wrinkle or lift the decal. The suggestion of appling the decal to a frest "tacky" coat of clear finish is not a good suggestion, due to the fact, that as the finish dries, it "shrinks" This will cause the decal to, again, wrinkle or lift. If the decal is a "printed paper" decal, applying a clear coat over the decal, will give protection to the decal. The only finish I normally use on instruments, is Lacquer because, I can repair damages that occur to the instrument. Other finish, do not repair well. I've seen guitars finish in the new "Plastic finishes" used as clear coats on automobiles, they are very durable, but also, very expensive for the materials. My suggestion, is to contact a luthier and get his opinion. One word of caution, is that factory finishes, are formulated to provide best protection, and appearance for the instrument. Aftermarket finishes, may not always give you the sound quality that you expect.

How Vinyl Decals Are Made
Should You Make Use Of Vinyl Window Covering Film For Privacy And Energy-Efficiency?
A few years ago we had a home where the previous homeowner had built a sunroom off the back. This glassed-in place looked out to the hills on every side, and the sight was spectacular. We set chairs out there, intending to use it as extra living space. However, we soon found that our ideas weren't going to work. If the weather was even warm, so much sun shone in the windows that the area was incredibly hot. Even though the room was air-conditioned and had a ceiling fan, it still heated up like an oven. I wish that we would have known about vinyl window covering then, because we could have used it to fix our problem.
Vinyl film is an excellent creation, because it provides a perfect solution to the issue of sun shining into your home and fading your furniture and carpets. You are able to opt for a vinyl window covering which has various styles and colors that will highlight your room and also provide privacy for your loved ones. As an example, having sidelights all-around your front door may seem like an interesting idea, however it doesn't take long to know that they also allow people to have an unobstructed view into your private life. Window film can deal with this problem both simply and cost effectively.
Sad to say, vinyl window coverings are not perfect. Manufacturers will inform you that it is very difficult to generate film that both obstructs solar rays and lets a sufficient amount of light through a window. For that reason, with most kinds of film, you sacrifice natural light to be able to block the harmful rays of the sun. With some reflective films, around 85% of all desireable light can be blocked. Therefore, it's important that you choose your window film with care. You want a film that is truly spectrally selective. Even though many brands state that they are, very few really have this feature.
You need to have at least 70% sunlight getting through your window film. People function much better when they're exposed to sunlight, making them more alert and effective. Spectrally-selective films will cost a little more, however they will also give you the best performance in keeping damaging rays out while letting sunlight in. Used correctly, vinyl window covering can be a true blessing for any house or business owner.
