Winter X Games Events Should Be In Winter Olympics
Olympic Sports can be, let's be honest, a little on the lethargic side. Even in the zany-bold-italic-underline would of next year's London Olympics, the only thing keeping anyone awake is the logo. And no, the logo isn't about a stunning new vision for the games or an inspire youth friendly approach. Because frankly, it doesn't. The excitement surrounding the logo is purely in whether we'll get any exciting new interpretations of what it depicts: can the 'Simpsons Character in unbroadcastable act' angle possible be bettered? Doubtful.
So as an alternative we can sit around in our Roxy hoodies and watch events like the Winter X Games. But whilst it's great that the Winter X Games and Summer X Games series exists, surely the sports they contain have a place in the mainstream sporting calendars by now?. Is Gymnastics really more skill-based and formalised that BMX riding or skateboarding? {Are the more dangerous forms of Skiing and Snowboarding in the Winter program any less valid than the standard stuff in the Winter Olympics}And is anything in the Winter Olmpics any less 'extreme' than the stuff we see on the boards of the Winter X Games?
The slopestyle events are easily the best part about the Winter X Games, which have just finished up their Fifteenth installment. To bring you up to speed, Slopestyle isn't a catwalk for the Animal Clothing brand (though the coolness of the threads of show is kind of indisputable). Performed on skis and snowboards, slopestyle sees competitors spinning, grabbing, grinding and flipping down a course that features multiple ramps and rails. You're then graded on your speed, your deft performance of tricks and, clearly, you ability to avoid crashing into Fox Clothing advertising hoardings. At the latest Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado, World Champion Enni Rukajarvi came out on top in the women's event. Meanwhile, there were massive upsets in the men's event: a collection of 17 and 18 year olds took the podium places, with Sebastian Toutant the Gold medal winner.
